Launch of esports at the UK Corporate Games Coventry & Warwickshire 2023
We are delighted to be introducing esports to the 2023 UK Corporate Games. The University of Warwick is set to host the sport at its state-of-the-art Esports Centre and with Warwickshire being home to the second largest cluster of games development companies in the UK outside of London, it’s the perfect setting for all gaming enthusiasts.
Globally the esports industry has seen exponential growth in the past couple of years and has formed a huge following, which is expected to continue rising. The gaming industry is open to all and promotes creativity, collaboration and social connections. Warwick is part of a broader gaming ecosystem, and due to its popularity, it’s a fitting year to launch it on to the sport programme at the UK Corporate Games.
Participants will have the opportunity to enter up to one or two events, individual and/or team event. The team event will be on Saturday 5th August, playing Rocket League, car football style game with teams of three competing against other organisations in a World Cup knockout format. Whereas, the individual event will take place on Sunday 6th August playing Fall Guys, building a character to compete in a series of fun and competitive last man standing games.
Jack Fenton, Head of esports at the University of Warwick, said:
We are excited to be hosting the UK Corporate Games’ first ever esports competitions. The Esports Centre at the University of Warwick is the only UK organisation to have ever been nominated for two international esports awards. With its popularity growing, it was just a matter of time before esports was introduced.
The beauty of competitive gaming is that it is a truly level playing field. It’s considered widely as a ‘mind sport’, anyone of any gender, age, ability, or experience can get involved in esports and I hope it’s an eye-opening experience for many at this year’s games. I know that the rest of the Corporate Games team are just as excited as we are to make the whole event more accessible with two games that are easy to pick up and heavily linked to the region’s creative cluster!
Ryan Johnson, Director of Sport & Communications at the UK Corporate Games, said:
Adding esports on our 2023 sport programme will provide additional scope for people to get involved. The esport competition will have an individual event as well as a team event, with two engaging Games for participants to get involved in. We see this as a great addition to the Games and an opportunity to engage with the local gaming community. The esport centre at the University of Warwick has a fantastic setup and Jack and his team are really enthusiastic about hosting the event.
The University of Warwick will be hosts of the UK Corporate Games, SuperCentre Registration, Welcome Festival, and Great Games Party, as well as up to 15 other sports. With sports ranging from individual ones such as golf, badminton, running to team sports that include dragon boat racing, football and netball, there’s no better way for companies to unite their staff for an unrivalled festival weekend.
The UK Corporate Games is the ultimate mix of sport, business and tourism and people will come from all over the UK and Europe. A platform to engage employees, promote health & wellbeing and to broaden networking opportunities. Discover how the Games can motivate your organisation in 2023.
